FM200 is a clean agent fire suppression gas — chemically known as HFC-227ea — designed to extinguish a fire in seconds without leaving residue, without damaging equipment, and without needing to evacuate the space beforehand in most configurations. That makes it the go-to suppression system for environments where water or foam would cause more damage than the fire itself: server rooms, data centres, electrical switch rooms, and archives.What makes FM200 different from a water sprinkler or foam system isn't just that it's a gas — it's that it works by absorbing heat and interrupting the chemical reaction that keeps a fire burning, rather than smothering or cooling from the outside. FM200 installation starts with calculating the room's volume and any leakage paths, since the system's agent concentration has to be sized correctly for the space to actually work — undersizing it means the fire isn't fully suppressed, oversizing it wastes agent and cost unnecessarily. Once sized, we install the cylinder bank, run discharge piping to the nozzles, wire in detection and the control panel, and commission the whole system before handover, confirming it will actually discharge and reach suppression concentration if triggered.
Once an FM200 system discharges — whether from an actual fire or accidental trigger — the cylinder needs refilling before the system is protecting the room again, and that's not something to leave until it's convenient. We refill and recharge FM200 cylinders, and also run scheduled maintenance checking cylinder pressure, detection devices, and control panel function, so the system's still ready to discharge correctly if it's ever needed and hasn't quietly drifted out of spec since the last check.
FM200 and Novec 1230 are both clean agent suppression gases and get compared often, since they solve the same problem in slightly different ways — FM200 has a longer track record and is generally the lower-cost option, while Novec 1230 has a shorter atmospheric lifetime and is sometimes preferred where environmental impact is a specific project requirement. Neither is strictly "better" — the right choice usually comes down to project budget, regulatory preference, and whether environmental criteria are part of the building's specification.
FM200 systems are most commonly specified for data centres and server rooms, electrical and switch gear rooms, telecom facilities, archives and record storage, and other spaces where the value of what's being protected is high and water-based suppression isn't an option.
