How ANPR Works

An ANPR camera captures an image of a vehicle's license plate as it approaches, then uses recognition software to convert that image into readable plate text almost instantly. That plate number is checked against a database of authorized vehicles, and if it matches, the system can automatically trigger a connected gate barrier to open — no card, fob, or manual check needed. If the plate doesn't match, the vehicle can be denied entry, logged for review, or routed to a manual check, depending on how the site's configured.

ANPR is most commonly installed alongside a gate barrier system, since the camera's real value is triggering automated entry rather than just capturing plate data on its own. We assess each site's entry point before specifying camera position and configuration, rather than mounting a camera wherever's convenient and hoping recognition rates hold up in practice.

Recognition Accuracy & Conditions

Not every ANPR camera performs the same in real-world conditions, and this is where a lot of installations fall short — a camera that reads plates perfectly in a demo can struggle with glare, low light, or a fast-moving vehicle at an actual gate. Better-performing cameras use features like adjustable infrared illumination to handle both reflective and non-reflective plates, wide dynamic range to manage strong sunlight and shadow at the same entry point, and fast shutter speeds to avoid motion blur on vehicles arriving at speed.Given how much UAE gate entrances deal with strong daylight glare and low-light evening traffic, we factor lighting conditions into camera selection and placement rather than assuming any ANPR camera will perform consistently regardless of the site.

What Affects Plate Recognition

Plate recognition accuracy depends on several site-specific factors working together: the camera's distance and angle relative to the vehicle's approach, the plate's condition and reflectivity, and the lighting at different times of day. A camera mounted at the wrong height or angle can technically be "installed" while still missing plates consistently, which is why we assess the actual approach path and lighting at a site before finalizing camera position, rather than treating placement as a formality.
